KidsCorner - The Unique Bison

BISON ARE VERY UNIQUE CREATURES

One way that bison are different from other animals is seen in their bones. Compare the skeletons below. Can you tell which is a horse, which is a cow and which is a bison?

The skeleton of the cow is at the top, the middle skeleton belongs to a horse, and the bottom skeleton is that of a bison. The long bones on the top of the bison’s back are what gives the bison its distinctive “hump.” Those bones are called thoracic vertebrae and the long part that sticks up from each vertebra is called the spinous process. Bison are the only animals in the world that have such long spinous processes on their vertebrae.
